چکیده

Managers often use tournaments which motivate workers to compete for the top, compete to avoid the bottom, or both. In this paper we compare the e¤ectiveness and e¢ ciency of the corresponding incentive schemes. To do so, we utilize optimal contracts in a principal-agent setting, using a Lazear-Rosen type model that predicts equal e¤ort and e¢ ciency levels for the three mechanisms with the appropriate distribution of prizes. We test the model’s predictions in a laboratory experiment and …nd that a mechanism which incorporates both competition for the top and away from the bottom produces the highest e¤ort from agents, especially in contests of a relatively larger size. Avoiding being last is shown to produce the lowest variance of e¤ort, be more e¤ective and, in larger contests, more e¢ cient than competing for the top. Finally, we show that behavior in all mechanisms is consistent with basic directional and reinforcement learning. BACKGROUND:Herbal methionine can be compared relative toDl-methionine with evaluation of bioavailability of this source ofmethionine. OBJECTIVES: An experiment was carried out todetermine the relative bioefficacy of herbal methionine (H-Met)®relative to DL-methionine (DL-Met) on performance criteria andimmunocompetence of Met sources in male broilers. Atotal of 160male broilers were fed a Met-d...

Observability and Overcoming Coordination Failure in Organizations An Experimental Study

Many organizations suffer poor performance because its members fail to coordinate on efficient patterns of behavior. In previous research, we have shown that financial incentives can be used to find a way out of such performance traps. Here we examine the sensitivity of this result to the ability of people to observe others’ choices. Our experiments are set in a corporate environment where subj...

Paying for Performance in Healthcare Organisations

Aligning Financial Incentives (FIs) to health policy goals is becoming increasingly popular. In many cases, such initiatives have failed to deliver anticipated benefits. Attributing this to the actions of self-interested and resistant professionals is not an entirely helpful approach. It is important to avoid simplistic assumptions to build knowledge of how and why schemes are implemented in pr...

Optimisation of Healthcare Contracts: Tensions Between Standardisation and Innovation; Comment on “Competition in Healthcare: Good, Bad or Ugly?”

An important determinant of health system performance is contracting. Providers often respond to financial incentives, despite the ethical underpinnings of medicine, and payers can craft contracts to influence performance. Yet contracting is highly imperfect in both single-payer and multi-payer health systems. Arguably, in a competitive, multi-payer environment, contractual innovation may occur...

A total of 700 day old female broiler chicks (Ross 308) were distributed into seven groupsin acompletely randomized designwith five replicates, and 20 chicks in each replicate. Dietary treatments, timeof the switch from an unsaturated sunflower oil (SFO) to a saturated tallow (T)dietary fat source, were: 1) SFO for the entire growth period (6 weeks), 2) SFO for 5 weeks followed byT for last wee...
